After the University of Akron men's basketball team eked out a 10-point win against Division II Malone University on Saturday, coach John Groce wasn't shy in lamenting the way his team practiced over the two previous days, saying they 'deserved' an early deficit after not 'honoring the process.'
Against Malone, the Zips (2-1, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) got off to a slow start and trailed by as many as 14 points. They didn't take their first lead of the game until there was just 6:45 to play.

Now as they prepare to open MAC play, Groce said on Monday that the lessons from this weekend were well-received — perfect timing as UA prepares to host Ohio University on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
'The practices leading up to Malone, we stunk,' Groce said. 'Today's was good. Today's was one of the best practices we've had since we've been together as a team. I thought we were really sharp. We had a great prep day yesterday. It's league play on the horizon here, so I'm sure Ohio's had the same.'
The Bobcats (4-2, 0-0) last played on Dec. 13, and lost to Marshall 81-67 on the road. Their other loss came on the road on Nov. 27 against then-No.8 Illinois, 77-75.
Three Ohio players scored in double figures in that game: Jason Preston (31), Ben Vander Plas (20) and Dwight Wilson (12). Preston is currently fourth in the conference in scoring averaging 19.3 points. Wilson is 12th, averaging 15.8 points, and second in the league, averaging 10 rebounds.
'I think it showed what we already knew, that they're one of the best teams in our league in terms of personnel, execution and guys making plays,' Groce said of the Illinois game. 'They're a really good team. I think Preston is an elite guard, Vander Plas is a difficult matchup at the 4 because he can play inside and out, and again the 5 man [Wilson] offers them a major paint threat, they're good on the glass.
'They've also had a lot of games. I know almost everyone has had more games than us at this point, but they've had a lot of games and some more time to maybe grow that allows you to get better. But I really like their team.'
Ohio hasn't played in more than a week, but they've still played six games overall. Only Toledo (nine) and Central Michigan (seven) have played more among MAC teams.

UA is on the opposite end of the spectrum, having played just three games so far, tied with Eastern Michigan for the fewest in the league. Six of the Zips' games have been either canceled or postponed due to COVID-19, with a matchup against Kent State that was originally scheduled for Saturday being the latest game impacted.
Mac Miller Basketball Game 2019
At this point in the season, the Malone game was seen as a necessary addition to the schedule to replace that lost rivalry game.
'When you don't have games, you're just kind of learning from your mistakes in practice,' Loren Cristian Jackson said. 'But it's practice at the end of the day. It's not the same thing. So, you kind of just brush it off a little bit. But in a game, you're letting your teammates down, you're letting your brothers down, so you want to learn it even better.'
Cristian Jackson is leading the league in both scoring (25 ppg) and assists (8.7 apg) following a 34-point, 10-assist outing against Malone. Enrique Freeman is leading the league in rebounding, averaging 10.3 a game after corralling 21 boards on Saturday.

With both teams featuring some of the best scoring and rebounding threats in the league, Groce said Tuesday's game is going to come down to who executes with the most precision.
'Obviously I don't want to say that there's no game management at all or adjustments that you make from game to game when you play these teams potentially two or three times,' he said. 'But it's about toughness and players making plays. So, looking forward to tomorrow and I'm sure Ohio's guys are as well.'
Tribble good to go
Greg Tribble, who started both of UA's first two games of the season, did not dress for the Malone game. Groce said on Monday that the 6-foot-1 guard would be available for Tuesday's contest, adding that he 'looked good today in practice.'
Three football players enter portal
Mac Miller Basketball Game Rules
In the last week, three UA football players have entered the transfer portal. Miciah Burton became the latest to do so on Friday. As a sophomore, he played in just two games, but as a freshman in 2019, he ran for a touchdown and 117 yards on 38 carries, appearing in 11 games.
Last week Nate Stewart also entered the portal as a graduate transfer. As a redshirt senior in 2020, Stewart played in all six games and had 217 receiving yards and one touchdown on 17 catches. In his four years at UA he had 1,017 career receiving yards. Zackary Leininger, a redshirt junior tight end who came to UA from Dodge City Community College (Kansas), entered the portal last week as well. He did not play in any games this season.
